Idioms
Idioms are a large part of fifth grade language skills.
Being able to understand parts of the English Language that are not meant literally is a huge step forward in language acquisition for students. We need idioms in our language and our writing because they plug the gaps in our vocabulary. Sometimes they're a more casual way to talk about an idea, but usually they add concise precision that alternative wording doesn't have. Sometimes they're the only expression for that exact idea.
We will be doing an "Idiom of the Week" as part of our figurative language study.
