Word Study
In fifth grade, our main focus in word study is going to be affixes and root words.
Not only does word study help our understanding of words, it also helps improve our reading and writing.
Each week, we will be looking at prefixes, suffixes and root words, their meanings, words that they are used in, and how we can use these word parts to help decipher new word meanings. The goal for students is to apply their knowledge of the word parts covered throughout the year to increase their ability to spell and understand many words, even newly encountered words.
We engage in several activities that students complete to help them gain a deeper understanding of the word list as well as selected prefixes, suffixes and root words.

Figurative Language
Just as important, and so much fun, is figurative language!
In fifth grade, we spend a fair amount of time discussing how figurative language is used in writing and why authors may choose to use it. We also dive into understanding it.
We look for figurative language within our reading as well as practice understanding common figurative language, such as idioms, adages and proverbs and how to understand metaphors and similes.
