Personification
We will be practicing using personification within our writing throughout fifth grade. Writers use personification because it providing human characteristics to anything -- whether it is a tree or a piece of machinery -- immediately encourages the reader to relate to the thing being described, and can evoke emotions such as concern or sympathy. Being able to grab and hold your reader's attention is an important skill we will be working on this year.
Onomatopoeia
We will be practicing using Onomatopoeias within our writing throughout fifth grade. Onomatopoeia is a powerful device that authors can use to create a more immersive atmosphere by engaging the sense of sound, a concept that is often difficult to convey with words. For this reason, writers can look to Onomatopoeias to help better describe their ideas.
Hyperbole
Hyperboles are a part of our everyday lives, are probably the most commonly used form of figurative language. We, as writers, can utilize hyperboles to add extra drama or comedy to a situation or even for the purpose of propaganda, such as our persuasive letters.
Alliteration
Although we will not be focusing greatly on alliteration, it is still a great figurative language style to know about. Alliterative words are also aurally distinct and will be quickly noticed as someone reads the phrase to himself or out loud. Knowing that these phrases stand out against the rest of the body of the text allows authors to place important ideas and messages in strategic places throughout the writing.
